1. Create a Simple Home Diagram

Sketch a basic layout of your home, ensuring all rooms are included. Accuracy in measurements is crucial, even if the drawing itself isn’t perfect.

Pro Tip: For rooms that are square or rectangular, calculate the area by multiplying the width by the length. For instance, a room measuring 5m by 2m will require 10m² of flooring.

2. Accounting for Chimneys and Recesses

If your room has recesses or chimney breasts, measure the entire space as though they aren’t there. The flooring will be cut to fit around these features.

3. Calculating the Total Area

Record the measurements for each area on your diagram. Break down the room into smaller rectangular sections, calculate the area for each, and sum them up to find the total area.

Pro Tip: Add an extra 5% to your total area calculation to account for waste.

4. Double-Check Your Measurements

Verify your measurements by measuring each length multiple times. Ensure to measure behind door frames and room trims as well.

Measuring Stair Carpet

For stairs, the process is similar. Measure the height and depth of each stair to determine the length, then multiply by the width to find the area of each step.

Measuring Guide for Laminate, Wood, and LVT Flooring

When planning for Laminate, Wood, or LVT flooring, remember that these materials come in various pack sizes. Keep this in mind while measuring your room.

1.

Measure the length and width of your room at the longest and widest points, including all alcoves and doorways.

2.

Add an additional 10% to your total area to account for excess and ensure that floor cuts can be staggered when laid.

3.

It’s wise to purchase a few extra pieces to have on hand for future repairs, allowing you to replace damaged planks without needing to buy a whole new pack.

4.

Calculate the total area and compare it with the pack size of your chosen flooring. For example, if a pack covers 1.9066m² and your total area is 15m², you will need 8 packs.
